8/15/2013

Workshop activities:

1. Introductions.

2. We talked about different ways by which multimodal strategies could be used in a classroom.
  • We shared examples of those strategies -- some of those examples came from lists that participants made on the whiteboard (pertaining to visuals, audio, kinesthetic elements & more).

3. Participants created postcard poems inspired by aspects of their course curricula -- combining visual and linguistic modalities.

4. Participants worked together to create sound & text compositions that focus on a particular subject / course objective.

Multimodal Approaches to Learning: A Fall 2013 Orientation
Week Workshop at Oakton Community College

Facilitated by Dan Godston

Thursday, August 15, 2013 (3:30-4:50 p.m.)

Thank you for coming to this workshop! During today’s workshop I will share multimodal pedagogical approaches that I have used in the classroom -- such as acting, music, visual art, and creative writing. These multimodal approaches can help to shed new light on subject matter covered on the syllabus, and help students to gain new perspectives on their comprehension of course material. Multimodal approaches can also give students new opportunities to meaningfully interact and collaborate with their classmates on mutual educational objectives. They can help to extend discourse into course material that an instructor has already used—such as lectures, homework assignments, and class discussions.

Today’s workshop participants will also work in groups to share and brainstorm strategies, activities, and materials that could be used in wide range of classroom settings—for students who are taking courses offered by any department here at Oakton Community College.

Resources regarding this workshop can be found at: www.pedagogicalarts.com/multimodal.html. Please note: that link will only be live until 8/19/2013. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding what we will be covering during today’s workshop, please contact me at dgodston@gmail.com.

Postcard Poems
This is a good way to combine visual art with writing, in an engaging way that pertains to a course objective. Here are some examples of postcard poems that former students (teens in a creative writing class) have made --

How can multimodal teaching strategies be used to help you engage more students and achieve the academic goals you have set for yourself in classes you teach?

Which multimodal teaching activities have you already used?

Which multimodal teaching strategies, activities and materials would you like to integrate into your teaching -- but which you haven't done yet?

What are some other key questions that you can think of -- that would relate to how multimodal methods can be used to reach more students in meaningful ways?
